Hello my darling swearees. First things first: I have a whole week off next week. Yay to spending money I don’t have having a beautiful, relaxing time with my amazing partner! That also means that I won’t be posting a podcast episode next week, but I will the week after.
Secondly, I wanted to talk about how ADHD affects my life POSITIVELY. I know, I know. Mostly we just hear about how ADHD is a pain in the buttzooka, but there are actually some amazing benefits that come with it.
*clears throat*
*starts coughing uncontrollably because that’s the kind of stuff that happens every time I try to make a point*
I’m pretty damn good at my job. Of course I’m not talking about my general paperwork shituation, but the coaching? The actual thing people pay me for? Yes, I am good at that. And that is because:
I absolutely love working with people, and my brain lights up like a Christmas tree on steroids whenever I need to figure something out or come up with solutions. Both of these things allow me to hyperfocus on the client I have in front of me. Want to feel extra special? Work with a coach who has ADHD. I promise you won’t regret it.
My brain doesn’t filter out stimuli, so everything comes in all at the same time. This helps me make connections other people wouldn’t be able to make, which means I can read body language
almostas well as I can speed walk. And thanks to that, I can bypass the masks most of us wear and go straight to the core feeling or issue. It also means I can generally trust my intuition: if something feels off, it usually is.I feel things deeply, which helps me understand where other people are coming from when they are experiencing big emotions, no matter what caused it.
Next up: my top skills. My old corporate motivation letters didn’t lie about my creativity and problem-solving skills. They did however lie about how I LOVE working in a most definitely toxic high-pressure work environment with lots of extra responsibilities without adequate pay growth opportunities.
Ahem, back to the creativity and problem-solving. I have the ability to think in multiple directions at once, which I call ‘having a fireworks brain’. My ADHD brain also doesn’t switch off the ‘network’ which is involved in mind wandering when I’m focusing on a task. And on top of that, it is as naturally driven to find more information, as horny bunnies are to ehm… have some fun. All of that combined, leads to one hell of a creative, problem-solving brain!
Last but not least, I thrive under pressure, and have energy for days. Moving to another country, getting my paperwork sorted and learning another language while building my own business and a new social network? You got it! I’ll get it done, as long as I don’t have to take the trash out or do other ridiculously boring jobs.
There are many, many more benefits, but I’ll talk about those another day. Right now I got some holiday shenanigoose (Belgians and Dutchies will get this one) to figure out.
What about you, my fellow ADHDers? How does your ADHD help you?
PS: I can’t get paid via Substack for the work that I do because of where I live, so you can become a paid subscriber or… buy me a coffee via my Buy Me A Coffee profile. Thank you for your support!
Wow wow wow! I feel so heard and seen! I ping multiple ideas at one time and light up when I have to use my analytical skills and create innovative ways to find solutions. I could go on and on but i definitely view my ADHD as a superpower and NOT a hindrance now 🥲🥹🤧🩵
My favorite line is “my brain lights up like a christmas tree on steroids.” 🎄 😂 🫶🏻
